The Top 5 Things Mothers Really Want on Mother's Day

If you weren’t aware, Mother’s Day is right around the corner. May 8th in fact. I’m sure you haven’t forgotten about the mother in your life, but if the day has come up faster than you thought, then maybe it’s time to sit down and think about a few things. What do moms really want for Mother’s Day? That’s a pretty good question and I might have the answer to it (even-though I’m not a mom or female)! No, I’m not the one that came up with these ideas, but a survey did which has good data in it. Numbers don’t lie, right?

I figured I would share the top five things moms want for Mother’s Day.  I am not just making these up in my head.  These results come from a survey put on by RetailMeNot, which shows what moms really want for Mother’s Day.  If you are a mom, then you probably agree with these, but you might have some other thoughts or plans.  Not only does this survey show what moms wanted for Mother’s Day, but it also shows what people actually plan on buying their mothers.  The results are funny to see what moms really want compared to what they will probably get.

What Moms Want for Mother’s Day

Top 5 things Moms want for Mother's Day

Spa Day

Does it surprise you that the majority of mothers want a relaxing spa day for their celebration?  I really doesn’t surprise me at all.  My wife loves a spa day.  I have given her a few spa gift cards before and she loved them.  Getting the spa treatment and having some time to relax is awesome and that is why a spa day is number one.  If you need a gift card for a spa, check out the Spafinder Wellness 365 gift card.

The sad thing about the survey is that apparently only a small percentage of moms are going to get a spa day. It could be the expense or it just not being thought of. If you want a spa day, you better leave some hints!

Nice Meal

Who doesn’t love a nice nice out at their favorite restaurant or having their favorite meal cooked for them right at home?  Apparently moms love it!  15% of the women surveyed said they wanted a nice meal for Mother’s Day.  Who can blame them.  There is something awesome about good food, especially when you don’t have to clean up afterward.  While meals at restaurants can be expensive, you can cook your spouse’s or mother’s favorite meal right at home.  Apparently, dinner is a popular gift for mothers as well.  Hopefully they enjoy your nice meal!

Helpful hint – Try to get mom out of the house for a bit (maybe to the spa!) so you can surprise her with a meal when she gets home. What’s better than walking into the house with the smell of your favorite meal filling the air. Here are a few ways to save at the grocery store when you’re out buying the ingredients.

Gift Card

I think gift cards are awesome.  What is not to love?  You can get a gift card to your favorite store and then buy what you want.  You don’t have to deal with returns, which is very common on Mother’s Day, according to another survey by RetailMeNot.  Nine out of ten people surveyed think moms have returned at least one thing in exchange for something else.  This doesn’t surprise me at all.  Instead of buying a gift they might not like, why not just go with a gift card?  According to the survey, more people plan on getting gift cards than mothers want them.

Try to give it some thought though. Don’t just head out to your grocery store and pick up a Visa or Mastercard gift card and put money on it. While it does give the Mom in your life the ultimate in flexibility, it also shows a little lack of effort. Find out her favorite store, head over there, and pick up a gift card. It’s pretty easy. Now, if her favorite store has a gift card for sale in the grocery store, then by all means. Otherwise, go take a little shopping trip!

Here’s a little hint – If you have a lot of coins laying around, go hit up Coinstar. While there is a fee to process your coins for cash, it’s free when you get a gift card. Check out how to do it.

Jewelry

Of course jewelry is on the top five list.  While it is on there, I am surprised it is not closer to number one.  Maybe most mothers don’t need anymore jewelry or they want to save it for their anniversary.  It could be that children don’t give the best jewelry as gifts. I don’t know, but I don’t plan on getting my wife jewelry this Mother’s Day, but that is because I leave it to different times of the year. I also don’t like how expensive jewelry is.  If you are going to buy jewelry for Mother’s Day, then make sure you find a good piece that doesn’t break the bank.

Many of the large jewelry stores put on big deals for this day specifically. You do need to be cognizant of the quality, but make sure you don’t go out and buy jewelry just because it’s high on the list. I think no jewelry is probably better than a piece of junk. That’s just my opinion though.

Day Off

There is no better gift than a day off from your kids.  I am not saying that I despise my child, but life with a child is hectic (especially a toddler).  I can see why this is on the top five list.  Getting a day off is great. Not only does it not cost money, but it also can be just so relaxing.  I would probably ask for this for Father’s Day as well. Getting some personal time is really great and it can rejuvenate the spirit.  If you are struggling to figure out a gift for Mother’s Day, then think about giving a day off. Maybe let the kids create a little “time off” coupon to give to Mom or give it to your spouse and say you will take the kids out of her hair for the day.

What Moms Apparently Don’t Want

Do you know what I don’t see on this list?

Flowers!

Apparently, moms are over flowers and I can’t blame them. I wouldn’t think of just giving flowers to my wife. This is especially true considering the cost of flowers is outrageous around Mother’s Day. Why pay over $100 for flowers that will be dead in a couple of days?

If you plan on giving flowers to your mom or spouse on Mother’s Day, then at least get a deal and don’t consider it the only thing you need to get. I have found time and time again that I can get some great looking flowers at my local supermarket florist section. They take care of their roses and other flowers and they last for some time. I have never gotten flowers that didn’t last at least a week. Many have lasted upwards of two weeks. The best part is I paid more about 60% less than those who order online or at their local florist. I won’t do that anymore. It’s crazy.

So, these are the things that mothers want for Mother’s Day.  Do any of them surprise you?  Are you giving your mother one of these gifts?

  1. I went to Pier One for my mom. She’s obsessed with everything there, so I got a few pieces for their boat. It wasn’t cheap, but I know she’ll love it.
