Not only do American’s have an overeating problem, but we also overspend (much like our government). According to the graphic below, the average American is spending $1.33 for every $1 earned. Are you kidding me? No wonder we have such a problem with debt, whether it be student loans, auto loans, home loans, or credit cards.
As I look toward creating some great goals for 2013, I had to put my retirement savings under the microscope. How am I doing now that I am funding it? How much more do I need to save? When do I want to retire? All of these questions are great and can be easy to deal with with the right resources. Luckily for me, I was able to locate a great infographic from Money Crashers. They ask the simple, yet powerful question, “Will you be ready for retirement?”.
I have been working hard on building my emergency fund, so I figured I would finally cash in my coins. I have slowly built up my coins by just adding them into a large wine bottle (a really large bottle) over time. I didn’t pay attention to how many coins I have collected over the years, but I think the amount is getting pretty substantial. Instead of using them to purchase things I don’t need, I figured I would deposit them into my savings account. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been as easy as I thought it would be.

My personal debt story begins the same as many people’s does, with one credit card and the feeling of freedom on the horizon. I got my first credit card during my freshman year in college. I was working at the time, but didn’t earn much. I had enough to pay for gas and go out when I wanted to eat something that was not made during a creative cafeteria night. My credit card was a SonyCard, which gave me points to get free Sony electronics. This was a win-win for me because I love electronics and I love being able to “afford” the things I want. This card was the beginning of a long journey that I will never forget.
